The Theatre Benchmarking Reports have proved invaluable to defining the work of our audience development. The reports build up a detailed snapshot of audience behaviour and help us compare ourselves to other venues in the area to see were we might improve our practice in order to connect with more people. Used in conjunction with other resources from Audiences Yorkshire and internal research, we can build a really clear picture on how to move forward and utilise the findings every step of the way.

Participation Table

Data comes from the Active People survey. The same raw data has been used as was used to establish the baseline for NI11 figures, i.e. for the six-month period between April – October 2008. New analysis of data from the Active People survey shows that on average 28.6% of the English adult population state they have spent time doing creative, artistic or musical activities in the last 12 months, but this varies from 39.3% in Camden to just 16.6% in Wigan. Figures also show that whilst there is generally a strong correlation between participation in the arts and attendance at arts events, there are areas where levels of participation are proportionally much higher (including Manchester, Hackney and Cornwall) and places where it is much lower (including Havering, Knowsley and Sefton).
